Antique Old World is one of the most character-rich finishes in the Ashore Lighting palette. Deep aged tones are relieved by subtle variation across edges, raised surfaces, and recessed areas, allowing ornamental details and the natural dimensionality of the ironwork to remain visible.

Why Hand-Applied Finishes Are Different

A hand-applied finish behaves differently from a uniform factory coating.

Rather than attempting to make every portion of the ironwork look mechanically identical, the finishing process allows differences in depth, texture, relief, and geometry to remain visible. Raised surfaces may catch more light. Recessed areas can appear deeper. Curves, intersections, forged details, and broad architectural bands may each reveal the same finish differently.

That variation is intentional.

The character of a handcrafted wrought iron fixture comes from the relationship between the material beneath the finish and the surface treatment applied above it. A finish should complement the ironwork rather than conceal it.

A warm finish viewed beside limestone, walnut, leather, or aged stone may appear quieter and more integrated. The same finish against white plaster or pale cabinetry can create considerably greater contrast. Darker finishes can emphasize silhouette and negative space, while softer metallic finishes may reflect more of the light and color already present in the room.

We manufacture our own lighting.

Our fixtures are designed and produced in-house, and the finish is considered as part of that manufacturing process. The ironwork is formed, joined, refined, prepared, finished, and assembled with the character of the complete fixture in mind.

This gives us direct control over the relationship between the finish and the iron beneath it.

A broad architectural chandelier, an expressive branch fixture, a forged wall sconce, and an ornamental lantern may all carry the same finish differently because the forms themselves interact differently with light, texture, and surface variation.

As a third-generation lighting manufacturer, our objective is not to erase every trace of the handmade process in pursuit of industrial uniformity. It is to create a controlled, intentional finish that complements the form and character of the handcrafted ironwork.
